From TA to Travel- a Whirlwind!

We've never had this short of notice for traveling before so this was a unique situation.  On Monday morning I got word that our consulate appointment was confirmed, but I needed to wait to get confirmation that our provincial business was in order and that we could have a July 1st gotcha.  I think I heard later that night that that was in line as well. I called around on Tuesday morning for price quotes for flights and booked tickets late Tuesday night.  Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were full of busy work, crossing little things and big things off the to-do list.  I stayed up far too late the night before we left finishing packing, but it had to get finished.  Rick came home from an Ag teacher convention really late that same night.  We put the bags in the car and I tried to sleep, but didn't sleep well...combination of worrying about what I was forgetting, missing everyone at home, and the fear of the unknowns with travel. 

Thursday morning came quick and it was time to say goodbye.  Always so hard.  Rick, Evan, and I got in the car at about 6:30 a.m.  We stopped at Rick's school to make a few last minute copies and  check Rick in for his domestic flight and then headed to Chicago.  We got there around 8:30 a.m.  We took the subway to the terminal- Evan and I said a quick goodbye and then headed to the international terminal.  Rick headed towards his domestic terminal.  We got our first work-out for the day when we went up and down the terminal searching for United only to find out that United has its own terminal along with a couple other
airlines.  Oddly enough- United was listed in the Subway under just about every concourse and it did say international terminal...hmmm.  So we got back on the subway and went to terminal 1.  It didn't take too long to check in our two big bags.  Getting through security took a little longer.  We then found our gate and did some walking around and hanging out.   We talked to Rick before he took off for Nashville to train a team of teachers.  We even got to talk to him after he landed.  Our flight was at 12:30 p.m.  It was delayed to 1:15 p.m. for mechanical problems. That turned into 1:45, which turned into 2:30.   We eventually did load the plane and everyone was in their seats with their bags stowed, ready to go.  Many had started a movie.  YES- we had a movie screen in our seat this time....so much better than last year.   We also got put in the Economy Plus section with a little more leg room because the Economy section had one open seat and we would be split up.  We were only one row ahead of another adoptive family I had connected with prior.  We were feeling good.  Then they came on and said that because things had taken longer than originally planned, they would need to find a whole new flight crew.  We had to get off the plane, with all of our carry-ons.  They said that we'd go at 6  p.m. and to be back in the concourse by 5:15 p.m. to load.   We got in line for food vouchers and then headed to get some dinner and make a few calls.   We came back shortly after 5 and eventually the screen said 6:30 instead of 6:00.  Then we watched a storm come in and the runway get backed up.  They still weren't ready.   Finally we had a new crew, but they had a bunch of paperwork to fill out.  We loaded around 7:00 maybe and sat on the plane for about 2 hours between waiting for the plane to pull back (still finishing paperwork) and waiting on the runway.   It felt so good to FINALLY be in the air. 

Evan was a trooper on the plane-only once he was not feeling so good.  He slept a chunk and watched a number of movies.  I watched quite a few myself and slept maybe a couple hours.   Evan seemed wide awake and full of energy the last hour or two, which made me worry he was not going to be able to go to sleep when we got there.   We landed shortly after 1:00 a.m.  Saturday morning.  Our scheduled time was 5:20 p.m. Friday night.  Go figure- the line for customs and immigration was enormous!   Went through that and then headed to get our bags.  That part was pretty easy.   Now was when I started to get nervous because it was between 2 and 3 a.m. and there were no shuttles running and everything inside the airport was closed.  I wondered how I'd change money to get a cab to the hotel.  We walked almost out and saw an ATM.  I got in line and when I went up, I put in our credit card.  Got almost all the way through only to find out you needed a pin and I am not aware that we even have one for our credit card and I don't own a debit card.   I tried the only 4 options it could be...nothing.  This is when God intervened not once, but twice.  A many behind me from the states offered to trade me some American money for Hong Kong money- he would just take extra out.  I got enough to cover the cab.  Thank God.   We walked out of that area to find the man who had been sitting next to Evan on the flight (goes to China often for business) waiting for us.  He already had gone to the Marriott desk and got a card for us with the address of our hotel.  He then gave me a $50HK bill in case we didn't have enough for the taxi.  He showed us where to line up for the taxi to Hong Kong island.  What a blessing!  I was in awe of how two strangers could be so kind and helpful...and oh so thankful.  We got in a very long line for a taxi to Hong Kong island.  Talked to two girls living in Hong Kong, but originally from New Zealand.   Caught the cab.  It was an expensive cab- crossing islands and adding tolls is not cheap!   We finally got to our hotel on Hong Kong island and checked in.  By the time we showered and got our stuff out for the morning, it was already 5:30 a.m.  Evan slept 4 straight hours til 9:30 a.m. I could only sleep 2 and even that was broken sleep.  I got ready to go at 7:30 a.m. and got online for a bit while waiting for Evan. I had to shake him pretty good to get him up at 9:30.   We finished getting ready and headed down to check out.  After checking out we caught a cab to the Hung Hom train station on Kowloon island.  We walked around the station to find the train heading to Guangzhou.  Found the desk and got our tickets.  We waited to board.  The train was a bit delayed.  We left around 11:45 a.m. and got in around 1:45 p.m.  A nice man from Hong Kong, originally from England, helped us get our bags from the terminal onto the train.  Yes, I do think I over-packed once again.   We found our seats and ended up talking to a lady behind us with her son and nanny- originally from Canada and her husband waiting for her was from Italy, but they were living and working in Guangzhou.  She had another son waiting for her too.  She was shocked that I could have so many kids and not have help.  She thought for sure I'd have a nanny.  I told her not many people by us have hired help. :)      We passed through many towns with orphanages I knew, including Bao'an- the area our son is from.   When we got close to Guangzhou, the man that had helped us earlier came to our part of the train and said he'd help me get the bags off the train to the platform and up the escalator.   The woman said she'd help too.   That was a little crazy, but I should have known- the Chinese people are always in a hurry, have little patience, and want to push there way through.  Cutting in line here happens OFTEN.    It was a zoo getting off the train- people in such a hurry and pushing to get up the escalator.  We made it to the top and got in line at the immigration desk.  Got our bags back together and  in order for me to handle myself and said our thank you's and goodbye's to the two nice people who had helped and talked to us.  We found the desk for the hotel shuttle and waited about 15 minutes for a shuttle.  Man is it humid here.  You just forget how humid it is- so hard to breathe even.

Our shuttle finally came and we got loaded and then dropped off at our hotel. It was such a good feeling to get checked in and to have our bags in our room.  And of course, air conditioning was nice too!   More about Guangzhou on the next post. 

Never Lose Hope- TA- Day 21

I really have believed that God had quite the story for this little guy.  Most of the time, I believed this would happen and July 1st would be our day.   I have to admit, there were a few times along this journey where I lost hope and didn't trust.  This afternoon was one of those times.  I did my share of sad crying today thinking the travel approval (TA) wasn't coming and that we would not beat the closure.  Once my agency closed, I just figured we were in for a July 15th gotcha day and that we would miss Reid's 6th birthday and that I would miss Elijah and Jonah's 5th birthday because I'd be in China (two years in a row to miss their birthday).  

I learned a good lesson tonight and it is a lesson I will likely need to re-learn again at some point because of our human nature. That lesson is to TRUST.  Trust in Him.  He has a plan and He will see it through.  God's plans are always best! 

Tonight I got an email saying that it was the latest DHL delivery our agency has ever seen and that our TA is here!  They submitted our consulate appointment date requests- you have to list your top 5 choices. Now I am praying that we can squeak in a consulate appointment for the week of the 8th so we can have a July 1st gotcha day/birthday party with mom and big brother.  We will know Monday morning about our consulate appointment and may be booking quite the last minute airline tickets.

The picture below was taken last summer when we were in China adopting Lena- we sent him an anonymous cake for his 5th birthday because we felt bad that he seemed so depressed with so many of his buddies finding families and leaving around this time. This year, I pray I will be able to give him a great big hug on his 6th birthday, July 1st.  God didn't bring us this far for it not to work out. Hopefully there will be happy tears for me on July 1st!      

Thank you to Diana and Lydia for staying late on a Friday night and for getting everything out tonight for us and thank you God for moving the first half of the mountain.  Praying and trusting in your name.

Getting Closer

One of the few perks of the new system is that agencies can now tell when important documents are issued/approved.  Our agency's system kicked into gear today and they were able to see that our TA (as well as two of my other friends' TAs' who are also with our agency) was approved.  Not sure what day it was approved, but it was approved!  WOO HOO!  Now...the hard part is not knowing when it will show up. It may be tomorrow or Friday.  Monday would be worst case scenario, but we are really hoping for tomorrow so we can book a consulate appointment and then get airline tickets booked.  They cannot book a consulate appointment without the actual document in hand and those appointments are filling up fast!    Please pray that it comes tomorrow and that we get a consulate appointment for the week of July 8th-11th.  If we can't, we have to wait until after the closure.  Also pray that we will find airline tickets that are not too insane.  The longer it takes, the higher they will go and let me tell you that they are already HIGH- like $2,400ish a piece high.  Not sure I can stomach another $400  to $500 jump on the price of each ticket.   And I thought $1,900 a ticket last year was high...sheesh.

And because we are so close to traveling, we got a final update on our little man!  The update was in Chinese.  It didn't translate too well...but it basically said:
His language, physical and intellectual development are normal. He can clear language to express all kinds of things. He walks freely and his physical development is good. When they photographed him, he was still helping teachers organize educational toys.  The classroom teacher likes him very much.

 An orphanage is a far cry from a family, but have I mentioned that one thing that I love about this orphanage is that they let the kids be kids and do some normal fun kid things?!?   That is so important.  This looks quite fun.  Evan even said, "Aww..cool!"

Please Pray our TA Comes this Week!

So TA's are rolling in.  Monday, many families got theirs, but they were mostly families waiting 25-28 days.  Whew.   We are on day 18 today and supposed to be expedited.  Today was tough.  I saw a couple TA's for people adopting children with the same special need as our son who were quite far behind us once upon a time.  Theirs were obviously expedited.  Why not ours?  Don't get me wrong-I am thrilled for them and so glad they can get their children before the closure.  Our son needs to get home too, as do a couple other kids whose families are waiting on their Travel Approval.  I've been holding onto the phone like it is glued to my hand.  Then I heard our agency got their DHL today, but no TA's.  Sigh.  I have been so strong lately and not crying since I heard about the upcoming consulate closure.  Today, I lost it.  It is my husband's birthday and he is out of town.  It is the day we got our TA for Lena last year (same timeline for her non- medically expedited adoption).   I just don't get it.

Then Fed-Ex shows up with a package with two CD's- one had updated pictures from when our agency met our son on their visit at the end of May/early June.  The other may be a movie- having trouble opening it.  Normally I would be thrilled to get this.  Today it was bittersweet.   I just wanted to cry more. I feel like I have done everything in my power to get him home as quick as I can, but I still feel like I am failing him.  I want to keep the hope up for a July 1st gotcha day, but my hope is fading away.  I know miracles happen.  I am not giving up hope completely unless TA does not come by Friday.  Consulate appointments are filling up fast though from July 1st-July 11th.   Pray with me that these children who need to come home to get the medical care they desperately need can come home sooner rather than later.  If we miss the July 1st gotcha- it will be July 15th.  We not only miss Reid's 6th Birthday and have to send another cake to the orphanage, but we will miss Elijah and Jonah's 5th birthday- the second birthday we've missed due to travel and the celebration of Lena's 1 year gotcha day with our family.   That's just hard on a mom's heart. I feel like after getting our photo album at the end of April he is probably starting to wonder if we are really coming.  I know God has a plan and I know it is in His timing, but I know this could have happened and am praying it still will.

Delays, Delays, and More Delays

No good news to report...yet!   There have been may delays across the board in the last 3 or so weeks.  At the end of May, things on the China side shut down for the adoption system to be re-vamped.  They re-opened June 3rd and things were a mess!  There were a lot of kinks and they were not really ready at all.  There still are kinks a week and a half later.   This system was supposed to speed everything up...well "supposed to" are the key words.  We have yet to see that.  So far it has done nothing but slow things down, basically to a standstill.   No one is getting their pre-approvals, letter of approvals, or travel approvals.  There were no travel approvals issued in about 3 weeks.  Finally yesterday, we saw the first travel approval posted via another agency.  Thank God for some movement- hoping it opens the flood gates.  There are a handful of families who have been waiting longer than us still waiting for their travel approval and many who are days behind us and the list just keeps growing.  To make it all worse, on the US side, the consulate in Guangzhou is closing in July to move buildings.  The last consulate appointment available is July 11th and then they won't have one available until July 24th.   The consulate appointment is near the very end of your trip.  Everything about your trips hinges on the consulate appointment.   This news means that July 8th gotcha days are no longer an option.  It is either July 1st or you wait until July 15th or 22nd.   July 1st is Reid's birthday.  July 15th is Lena's 1 yr gotcha day and Elijah and Jonah's birthday.  We need a miracle- we need our travel approval (TA) to come by the middle of next week, preferably today or tomorrow in order to get a July 1st gotcha day.  It is looking as if our TA is not being medically expedited either...not sure if that is China or our agency. Frustrating all around for many waiting parents and for the kids who are stuck waiting.  I saw this video today and it reminded me of the frustrations of the process.   http://vimeo.com/68088208

On a positive note, my wonderful sister-in-law so kindly dropped off and picked up our power of attorney document at the consulate to be authenticated (should Rick not be able to travel with me) and our passports to get our Chinese visas- you must get them prior to travel and they are not cheap.  We will see her Sunday and have those in our hands then.  Besides packing, we are set to go.

Article 5 has been approved...and hopefully picked up!

Normal time for Article 5 is a two-week turn around or 10 business days from drop-off to pick-up.  For those medically expediting it is 24 to 48 hrs and the only thing an agency needs to do is take the medical letters with the paperwork.  The consulate is actually very nice and many medical expedites have had success with this step without a problem.   I had not heard anything a few days after our article 5 was dropped off.  I checked in a few times- nothing.  A majority of our agency staff left for China this past Saturday until June 5th.   I checked in with the staff still in the office- it took a few extra days to hear back since almost everyone is in China.   They had heard nothing.  Knowing that this is not normal, I emailed the US consulate yesterday with our info and why our son needs to come home immediately, along with the medical letters.  While we slept, I got an email saying that it was approved!   Now we are just praying that our agency rep in China picked it up that day before they closed so we don't have to wait until Monday.   Supposedly this document gets mailed over night to the CCCWA in Beijing and then you start the wait for travel approval (TA).  TA waits range one week to four weeks, with two to three being average.  We are hoping for 2 weeks or less. 

Another traveling family adopting twin girls got these photos of our little guy last week- there was a lot going on in the swi so he was a little confused.  She said he picked out some stickers for himself and for my friend Nicole's daughter too...so sweet with the little ones. :)   She said he has changed so much since the last time she was at the orphanage- so much more confident and happy.   He looks like he has a little mischief in him too- though what boy doesn't? ;)

I better get packing and getting all the loose ends tied up around here....like getting the visas in the passport, figuring out what we are going to do for Reid's bed- whether it will be a trundle, a twin near the window, or if Rick will be configuring some sort of smaller bunk bed system or lofted bed since we have the slanted ceilings up there.
